High-frequency trading: useless and manipulative?

Posted by Shane On September - 30 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

brokerI found an interesting  article on the concept for High Frequency trading . The credit for the post is deserved by blogs.reuters.com.

The explosion of interest in high-frequency trading has started to drag new faces to sometimes staid industry conferences. Traders who for years worked on algorithms and computer codes behind the scenes are stepping into the spotlight. They’re appearing on more and more panel discussions, feeling the need to defend their practice against the slings and arrows of politicians and regulators.

So far, they’ve managed to mix exasperation with good humor. The head of one high-frequency trading shop, speaking on a panel this week, said that if you believe everything you read in newspapers you might think the practice is “an unfair, highly profitable and socially useless trading strategy implemented by highly secretive and unregulated traders using superfast computers to compete with retail investors, manipulate markets and front run flash orders causing volatility in the financial markets and creating systemic risk.”

He argued that a more accurate definition of high-frequency trading would be, “a wide variety of highly competitive, low margin trading strategies implemented by professional market intermediaries who have invested heavily in technology that have the effect of making the markets more efficient by enhancing liquidity and transparent price discovery to the benefit of investors.”

Eastwick is back on ABC tv series

Posted by Shane On September - 30 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

117469_9670“Eastwick,” ABC’s attempt at a spooky-smirky sort of satirical soap opera, premieres Wednesday and quickly curdles in its own cute quaintness. We’re back in Stephen King country, except King isn’t really to blame for this mess; it is based on books by John Updike, whose work in this vein already resulted in the movie “Witches of Eastwick” with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Veronica Cartwright, the last also appearing in — and classing up — the ABC romp.

If you never saw the 1987 movie The Witches of Eastwick, starring Jack Nicholson, or read the John Updike novel, ABC is providing the best catch-up with Eastwick.

Set in the fictional Rhode Island town of Eastwick, ABC’s new series follows three women on the cusp of discovering that they’re more powerful than they ever dreamed. Their quirky acts of persuasion, premonition and, let’s just say, tapping into Mother Earth, bring the mysterious Darryl to town.

While Paul Gross has some Nicholson-sized shoes to fill, his version of Darryl Van Horne may be just as evil, if not more. Gross stars opposite Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price and Jaime Ray Newman.

How will Darryl seduce the lovely ladies of Eastwick?

ken-lewisKen Lewis, the embattled CEO of Bank of America Corp., is leaving the company, succumbing to nearly a year of strife that followed his company’s acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co.

The bank, the nation’s largest by assets, said Wednesday that Lewis, 62, decided on his own to leave and would retire as CEO and also leave the company’s board by the end of the year. The company did not announce a successor, saying one would be selected by the time Lewis steps down Dec. 31.

The fact that no succession plan was announced indicated that the Bank of America board did not expect Lewis’ decision at this time. Nonetheless, the news, coming after shareholders had stripped Lewis of his chairman’s title earlier this year, wasn’t surprising because of the intense pressure he came under after the Merrill Lynch deal, including criticism about billions of dollars in bonuses given to Merrill Lynch employees.

Lewis had said he would stay on as CEO until after the company’s financial problems were resolved, a process expected to take several years.

However, with the bank also under heavy criticism from government officials, Lewis was increasingly seen as vulnerable.

“He’s had a big target on his chest for the whole Merrill Lynch deal, and I can only imagine the emotional stress he’s endured ” said Alan Villalon, senior research analyst at Minneapolis-based First American Funds, which owns Bank of America stock.

Tim-Tebow-Injury-150x150This is breaking news on Tim Tebow injury. Gators quarter back and possibly the best one in college today injured himself when deciding what to do with the ball. Tebow literally got slammed by the Kentucky defense and took a hard blow on his head.

One could make out shocked faces among the legions of Gator fans. The Florida number one team were out of state, and in Kentucky grounds when Tim Tebow took a big slam dunk from Kentucky defensive player Taylor Wyndham.

Tim Tebow’s head bumped against the shin of Florida right tackle Marcus Gilbert as Tebow hit the ground. The slam was so bad that Tebow lay motionless for a few minutes before he sat up on the ground. Subsequently after that Tebow was assisted off the field to the bench. Here Tebow was joined by his parents who were concerned about his safety.

While on the benches, Tebow was seen vomiting and throwing up. There were also reports that he was taken by the ambulance to the hospital for check up.

Antipodes_South_BayThe Antipodes Islands is  first of all a dream heaven to live  on . The natural surrounding of the Island will drive every one mad. But the only issue here is, one cannot live in this place because of Active Volcano the island has.

The Island is located near New Zealand.  The islands are 860 km far from the Stewart Island and the Antipodes Island is the biggest of the group, with an area of 20 square meters, followed by the Bollons Island and many more islets and stacks.

The Mount Galloway is Antipodes Islands’ highest point, at 402 m also being the most active volcano of the islands group. The Antipodes Islands are part of the Antipodes Subantarctic Islands tundra ecoregion.

The group, formerly known as Penantipodes is near to the antipodes of London, meant “next to the antipodes.” Captain Henry Waterhouse was the first that put the Antipodes Islands on a map. He was the captain of the British ship HMS Reliance.
