Russian spy suspect missing in Cyprus

A Russian spy suspect arrested in Cyprus and granted bail has gone missing, police say.

Christopher Metsos was held at the Mediterranean island’s Larnaca airport on Tuesday by immigration officers after an Interpol alert.

He is one of 11 people at the centre of an FBI spying investigation – the others are being questioned in the US.

A Canadian citizen, he was awaiting extradition to America on suspicion of espionage and money laundering.

Mr Metsos had been staying alone at a hotel in Larnaca for nearly two weeks and was said by local media to have been carrying a US passport.

He is depicted by US prosecutors as the alleged spy ring’s shadowy moneyman, visiting the US as early as 2004 to deliver bags of cash to its members.

The 11 were allegedly part of an operation where agents posed as ordinary citizens, some living together as couples for years. In security circles such agents are known as “illegals” or “sleepers”.

They were trained by the SVR Russian intelligence agency to infiltrate policy-making circles and collect information, according to papers filed in New York.

Investigators say some of the agents had been using false identities since the early 1990s, using codes and engaging in advanced computer operations, including posting apparently innocent pictures on the internet which contained hidden text.

‘Wonder Woman’ Gets a Makeover!

Posted by Tommy On June - 30 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Comic book superheroine Wonder Woman has traded in her spangled hot pants for urban leggings and upped her street smarts in a 21st century make-over for the 69 year-old character.

Wonder Women to get a makeover!

Wonder Women to get a makeover!

J.Michael Straczynski, the new writer for the DC Comics series, told the New York Times he wanted to “toughen her up and give her a modern sensibility” and change the outfit Wonder Woman has been wearing for almost seven decades.

The new costume features dark leggings, a studded denim jacket, spurs on her heeled boots and gloves in a new look designed by Korean-American artist Jim Lee of “X-Men” fame. Gone are the star-studded hip-huggers, undersized bustier and knee length, red go-go boots.

“She was stuck in 1941. And as female friends of mine kept asking, ‘how does she fight in that (bustier) thing without all her parts flying out? How does she carry her stuff?,” Straczynski told video game and entertainment website IGN.com in an interview.

“So my requests were pretty specific: toughen her look, make it more dynamic, more serious,” he added.

Wonder Woman, one of the few female superheroes in a world dominated by Batman and Superhero, has also seen her character given greater depth and more intellect as she debuts the new look in Issue 600, which hits comic book stands on Wednesday.

“Growing up, I always felt that she was a better character than her books…the stories tended toward being a bit precious, and definitely edged into being more about getting her into provocative poses…than really getting into her character,” Straczynski said.

“We will be making her stronger, favoring her smarts and her resolve and her resourcefulness, and making the remains of the world she once knew special by incorporating them into a more vital, unpredictable world. We take her very seriously,’ he added.

It may not eclipse the opening-weekend performance of franchise predecessors, but Summit Entertainment’s vampire-romance threequel “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is off to a bloody good — and record — start.

“Eclipse” fetched more than $30 million in estimated boxoffice from more than 4,000 domestic theaters programming midnight Tuesday performances, an unprecedented midnight tally. The witching-hour coin will be lumped in with Wednesday grosses.

'Eclipse's' early release sets sales record

Twilight Eclipse sets sales record due to early release

A first sequel — “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” — opened with $142.8 million in November, en route to registering $296.6 million in total U.S. and Canadian coin. Opening with midnight Thursday performances, “New Moon” rose to a then-record $26.3 million in witching-hour loot and a record $72.7 million in first-day Friday boxoffice.

The original “Twilight” unspooled in November 2008 with a first-weekend haul of $69.6 million and a total domestic cume of $192.8 million.

Prior to “New Moon,” the record for midnight boxoffice was held by Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which rung up $22.2 million from its earliest performances.

Eclipse” is expected to ring up more than $150 million through Monday, playing in a record 4,410 total locations. The coming weekend is considered a four-day theatrical frame, with Independence Day falling on Sunday and most U.S. workers marking a holiday on Monday.

In comparing the “Eclipse” debut with its franchise predecessors, industryites will be watching the threequel’s Wednesday-through-Friday grosses. But domestic rankings for the Independence Day holiday weekend will be based on Friday-through-Monday boxoffice.

Many believe “Eclipse” will have scooped so much boxoffice cream off the top of its opening by Friday, that its first-weekend tally will fall well short of $100 million. That still would top weekend rankings, with Paramount’s 3D family adventure “The Last Airbender” expected to open at No. 2 with about $50 million.

Directed by David Slade (“30 Days of Night”), “Eclipse” features Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart reprising roles of vampire, werewolf and anguished love interest, respectively.

SAN FRANCISCO—Google Inc. said that its Web search service in mainland China was partially blocked Wednesday, the deadline for the company to extend its Internet operating license in the country.

The company said the blockage appeared to affect only search queries generated by mainland China users of the company’s Google Suggest function, which automatically recommends search queries based on the first few letters a user types into the search box.

Google Says Web Searches Are Partly Blocked in China

Google Says Web Searches Are Partly Blocked in China

“It appears that search queries produced by Google Suggest are being blocked for mainland users in China. Normal searches that do not use query suggestions are unaffected,” the company said in a statement.

Google declined to speculate why only Google Suggest searches were being blocked. The blockage affected only searches conducted from within mainland China, not those from Hong Kong.

The blockage was first noted on a Google Web page, google.com/prc/report.html, which reports on the availability of the company’s services in mainland China. The page listed the Web search service as “partially blocked” as of Wednesday. Google’s Web search had previously been listed as “fully or mostly accessible.”

Other key services such as Gmail, News and Images remained “fully or mostly accessible.”

Google said Tuesday it would no longer redirect Chinese users to an unfiltered search site in Hong Kong automatically but would instead add a link on its main Chinese Web page to direct users to its Hong Kong search engine.

Google made the switch after the Chinese government objected to the automatic redirect and threatened to take away Google’s Internet operating license.

But it isn’t clear whether China’s government will find the change sufficient and extend the company’s license.

The standoff between Google and China appears to be reaching a pivotal moment three months after the company said it would reroute search traffic to Hong Kong, a move that enabled the Internet search giant to evade mainland China’s censorship laws.

The Chinese government told Google that the rerouting was “unacceptable,” according to a company blog post on Monday. Google said it was told its Internet license wouldn’t be renewed if it continued the practice.

The escalating dispute with China was sparked in January when Google complained that it had been the victim of a major cyberattack in which hackers stole some of the company’s proprietary computer code and spied on Google email accounts of Chinese human rights activists.
