New Planet found outside our Solar System

Posted by Riz On November - 18 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Astronomers claim to have discovered the first planet originating from outside our galaxy.

The Jupiter-like planet, they say, is part of a solar system which once belonged to a dwarf galaxy.

This dwarf galaxy was in turn devoured by our own galaxy, the Milky Way, according to a team writing in the academic journal Science.

The star, called HIP 13044, is nearing the end of its life and is 2000 light years from Earth.

The discovery was made using a telescope in Chile.

Cosmic cannibalism

Planet hunters have so far netted nearly 500 so-called “exoplanets” outside our Solar System using various astronomical techniques.

But all of those so far discovered, say the researchers, are indigenous to our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

This find is different, they say, because the planet circles a sun which belongs to a group of stars called the “Helmi stream” which are known to have once belonged to a separate dwarf galaxy.

This galaxy was gobbled up by the Milky Way between six and nine billion years ago in an act of intergalactic cannibalism.

The new planet is thought to have a minimum mass 1.25 times that of Jupiter and circles in close proximity to its parent star, with an orbit lasting just 16.2 days.

It sits in the southern constellation of Fornax.

The planet would have been formed in the early era of its solar system, before the world was incorporated into our own galaxy, say the researchers.

“This discovery is very exciting,” said Rainer Klement of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, who targetted the stars in the study.

“For the first time, astronomers have detected a planetary system in a stellar stream of extragalactic origin. This cosmic merger has brought an extragalactic planet within our reach.”

Dr Robert Massey of the UK’s Royal Astronomical Society said the paper provided the first “hard evidence” of a planet of extragalactic origin.

“There’s every reason to believe that planets are really quite widespread throughout the Universe, not just in our own galaxy, the Milky Way, but also in the thousands of millions of others there are,” he said, “but this is the first time we’ve got hard evidence of that.”

End Days

The new find might also offer us a glimpse of what the final days of our own Solar System may look like.

HIP 13044 is nearing its end. Having consumed all the hydrogen fuel in its core, it expanded massively into a “red giant” and might have eaten up smaller rocky planets like our own Earth in the process, before contracting.

The new Jupiter-like planet discovered appears to have survived the fireball, for the moment.

“This discovery is particularly intriguing when we consider the distant future of our own planetary system, as the Sun is also expected to become a red giant in about five billion years,” said Dr Johny Setiawan, who also works at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, and who led the study.

“The star is rotating relatively quickly,” he said. “One explanation is that HIP 13044 swallowed its inner planets during the red giant phase, which would make the star spin more quickly.”

The new planet was discovered using what is called the “radial velocity method” which involves detecting small wobbles in a star caused by a planet as it tugs on its sun.

These wobbles were picked up using a ground-based telescope at the European Southern Observatory’s La Silla facility in Chile.

GM Stock Price Today

General Motors(GM) Stock Symbol

Today has seen General Motors – also known as GM – start trading on the NY Stock exchange on IPO day, you should be able to see the GM stock price today on Market Watch. The initial public offering has set records, which analysts expect GM to raise around $23 billion that could be marked as the largest IPO in the world.

General Motors has had a tough time of late, and Chris Liddell (GM’s CFO) said he was “appreciative” towards those that stood by GM during this period. The stakeholders that stuck with GM should be happy with the results today, which have seen an increase at around 31 percent in their public offering.

Following on from the GM IPO date being set for final terms and stock price being set at $33 per share, we thought it would be good to take a closer look on “IPO Day”. Manikandan Raman over at Ibtimes.com asked if the blockbuster GM IPO would be enough? What are your thoughts on this? You can read their full article here, which looks at the potential of a speedier payback by General Motors to the U.S. treasury, and the article looks at the new GM owners that include Chinese state-run firms.

We should see the stock trade under GM’s symbol, and with car sales increasing the future looks good for GM but getting too relaxed could see problems creep up on them. Read more about GM’s IPO on ibtimes.com. What do you think GM’s next move should be?

you heard it! There is a new member in Google’s rivalry list. After Microsoft, Yahoo, its now time for Facebook to get into rivalry with Google.

How is that? Simple, Facebook, a brand that has 500 million loyal visitors on its database has a interesting new service for its visitors and that is FaceBook Email.

The project is named as “Gmail Killer”.

Holy cow, this is interesting.

Why is there a conflict between Google and Facebook?

Well, it all started when both the companies clashed with each other on information sharing. Facebook doesnt want Google to take the private information of its users and in return Google has banned Facebook from importing its users’ e-mail contacts.

Facebook has holding an invite-only event on November 15 around 10 am in the morning. I would be biting my time to see what Facebook has to announce on.

Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi

The central government has told the Bombay High Court that it had gained total legal ownership of the historic Jinnah House which is mired in controversy after heirs of the original house-owner Pakistan founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah staked claim to the property. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in an affidavit filed recently before the High Court, claimed that the government had acquired the Jinnah House in Mumbai as evacuee property and hence all rights of evacuee and others stood extinguished.

The affidavit was filed in response to a petition by Dina Wadia, daughter of Jinnah, laid claim to Jinnah House which stands on a 2.5 acre plot in posh Malabar Hill area of South Mumbai. Ninety one-year-old Dina, who lives in New York, has contended that she was the sole heir to her father”s property.

However, in another twist to the fight over the property, Mohammed Rajabally Ebrahim, grand-nephew of Jinnah, has claimed one-sixth share in the estate. The pleas of Dina and Abrahim were admitted in August this year.

Ebrahim has staked his claim on the basis of Jinnah”s will dated May 30, 1939, in which he had bequeathed his house to sister Fatima. Dina, on the other hand, has denied that Jinnah had left behind such a will.

The case will come up for final hearing next week.
