US should learn from India, triggers Wikileaks

According to whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, the US embassy has sent a diplomatic cable from New Delhi to Washington that said, America can learn lot of things from India’s secular attitude. In India there are, multi-religious, multi-cultural, heterogeneous, multi-ethnic society, which are practiced freely.

The cable dated Apr 2006, that was posted in The Guardian newspaper, praised India for its secularism that showing tolerance for all faiths.

The cable said that at the time when many nations were dominated by extremist movements, India moved in a right direction guided by strong native tradition of communal living, non-violent movements, freedom of press and realizing that political and religious hatred does not has any meaning.

But, India is always annoyed by the terrorism or regional fights provoked by politicians  for narrow political ends, it said.

After two days of Christ Koulis’ death, it has been confirmed that the cause of his death was a heart attack.

It was early Friday morning when the former plastic surgeon from Nashville Christ Koulis 42, died at the Northwestern Hospital in Chicago.

Chris Koulis was charged of killing his model girlfriend Lesa Buchanan in 2007. He was charged with unlawful negligence and providing her illegal drugs, whose overdose took her life.

A video tape that showed Koulis injecting Buchanan with drugs a week prior to her death cemented the charges against him and at the time of Buchanan’s death, Koulis was on probation, but later was set free of the two year sentence court ordered him.

According to Koulis’s lawyer, David Raybin, Koulis was under stress because of the accusation he was facing following the murder of his girlfriend. This might have led to a drastic heart attack that took his life, although he was optimistic that he will win his appeal.

Corporates Abuse Power, says SEBI

Posted by Riz On December - 18 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) chairman CB Bhave on Friday said regulating bigger entities is a greater challenge for regulators worldwide. While addressing a function in Mumbai, Sebi chief said bigger entities have more ‘persuasive power’ making it difficult to keep a check on them. Against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis when the bankruptcy of leading financial institutions brought down the whole financial markets world wide, the regulator said, “Financial markets are ahead of us and the regulators should not be caught off guard.”

Bhave further said the problem of regulating big corporates is a global phenomena and not restricted to India alone. And according to the regulator, the challenges for imposing a greater regulatory oversight is further compounded by the fact that these large entities use media and politicians to work around regulations.

“Their political and media access is tremendous and, therefore, regulators are going to be at the receiving end whenever they try and do something about these big entities,” he said, adding that the whole world is currently grappling with this issue and has not found an answer to it. They have tremendous ability to work around regulation and it will be interesting to see how this gets handled in the days to come,” he said.

The collapse of Lehman Brothers, Bearn Sterns and other leading banks and financial institutions in the West had created crisis of confidence leading to a major liquidity crisis worldwide. Subsequently, financial market regulators globally have attempted to bring ‘too big to fail’ institutions under greater regulatory oversight requiring them to have more disclosures. Further they have also tried to reduce excessive leverage in the system and bring more products traded on the Over The Counter (OTC) markets under the exchange trading platform to avoid counter party risk and ensure more transparency in the financial market functioning.

The Woman who cannot feel fear!

Posted by Riz On December - 17 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Nature’s blessings or self motivation, whatever is your opinion i am still in disbelief after coming across this piece of information.

A woman is reportedly to be the first of the case, who cannot feel Fear.

The woman has been tested in scary situations like threatening her with knife and by placing here alone in the haunted house, which normally makes other humans to piss in their pants, but the woman seemed unmoved and didn’t show any emotions.

Weird! isnt it!

She was even asked to handle the most dangerous snake called tarantula.

She showed no fear in any of the situations and had to be prevented from touching the tarantula because of the high risk of being bitten.

Researchers Got the Answers

Researchers at the University of Iowa said her inability to feel frightened was because she is missing a structure in her brain called the amygdala.

The structure has long been associated with emotional learning – experiments in animals have shown that removing it makes them fearless.

However, it has never been observed in a human before.

Lead researcher Justin Feinstein said: “Because she is missing her amygdala, she is also missing the ability to detect and avoid danger in the world.

“It is quite remarkable that she is still alive.”

The researchers hope that by studying the woman they can understand how the brain processes fear.

This could be useful in treating patients suffering from PTSD – such as soldiers who have been serving in conflict areas.

Mr Feinstein added: “Their lives are marred by fear and they are often-times unable to even leave their home due to the ever-present feeling of danger.”

By studying the woman, researchers hope to create treatments that selectively target the brain areas that can sometimes allow fear to take over.

Wiki leaks shatters India’s democracy speech by releasing the most shocking documents that revealed how Kashmir people were  ill threated and tortured by the Indian army.

According to diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks, US diplomats were secretly briefed by staff of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) about the systematic abuse of detainees in Kashmir.

The dispatches reveal that US diplomats in Delhi were briefed by ICRC in 2005 about the use of electrocution, beatings and sexual humiliation against hundreds of detainees, the Guardian reported Friday.

Other cables show that American diplomats, as recently as 2007, were concerned about widespread human rights abuses by Indian security forces, who they said relied on torture for confessions.

The revelations come at a time of heightened sensitivity in Kashmir after renewed protests and violence this year, the daily said.

The most highly charged dispatch is likely to be an April 2005 cable from the US embassy in Delhi which reports that the ICRC had become frustrated with the Indian government which, they said, had not acted to halt the ‘continued ill-treatment of detainees’.

The embassy reported the ICRC concluded that India ‘condones torture’ and that the torture victims were civilians as militants were routinely killed.

The ICRC has a long-standing policy of engaging directly with governments and avoiding the media, so the briefing remained secret, the report said.

An insurgency pitting separatist and Islamist militants – many supported by Pakistan – against security services raged in Kashmir throughout the 1990s and into the early years of this decade.

It claimed tens of thousands of lives, including large numbers of civilians who were targeted by both militants and security forces, according to the report.

The ICRC staff told the US diplomats they had made 177 visits to detention centres in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere in India between 2002 and 2004, and had met 1,491 detainees. They had been able to interview 1,296 privately.

In 852 cases, the detainees reported ill-treatment, the ICRC said. A total of 171 described being beaten and 681 said they had been subjected to one or more of six forms of torture.

These included 498 on which electricity had been used, 381 who had been suspended from the ceiling, 294 who had muscles crushed in their legs by prison personnel sitting on a bar placed across their thighs, 181 whose legs had been stretched by being ‘split 180 degrees’, 234 tortured with water and 302 ‘sexual’ cases, the ICRC were reported to have told the Americans.

‘Numbers add up to more than 681, as many detainees were subjected to more than one form of (ill-treatment),’ the cable said.

The ICRC said all branches of the Indian security forces used these forms of ill-treatment and torture, adding: ‘The abuse always takes place in the presence of officers and … detainees were rarely militants (they are routinely killed), but persons connected to or believed to have information about the insurgency.’

The cable said the situation in Kashmir was ‘much better’ as security forces no longer roused entire villages in the middle of the night and detained inhabitants indiscriminately, and there was ‘more openness from medical doctors and the police’.

Ten years ago, the ICRC said there were some 300 detention centres, but there are now ‘a lot fewer’. The organisation had never however gained access to the ‘Cargo Building’, the most notorious detention centre, in Srinagar, the report said.

The abuse continued, they said, because ‘security forces need promotions,’ while for militants, ‘the insurgency has become a business’.

In the same cable, American diplomats approvingly quoted media reports that India’s then army chief, Lieutenant-General Joginder Jaswant Singh, had ‘put human rights issues at the centre of a (recent) conference of army commanders’.

The cables reveal a careful US policy of pressure in Kashmir, while maintaining a strictly neutral stance.
