The craze with social networking sites is really doesn’t seems to be dying. Facebook continuing to be the King of Social networking sites recently had a new rival, Google+, by the Big G himself.

Well, just when I was thinking not another social networking site. Google+ went from invitation only to open access to the world and now its already on the top 10.

Could this mean the demise of Facebook? Just like Facebook, killed MySpace?

Last week, Google senior vice president of engineering, Vic Gundotra, announced that the trial was over and that all gmail and non-gmail users could subscribe. A week later, US-based market research firm, Hitwise Intelligence, announced that Google+’s market share in the global social media scene had soared by 1269 percent, since the end of the trial.

Hitwise Intelligence director of research, Heather Dougherty, stated that this growth brought the newly opened social media to be ranked as the third largest site in the social network and forum category.

“Opening access created a massive spike in market share of visits for the site, with a 1269% growth from the week ending September 17th to the week of September 24th” Dougherty said. “The site also received nearly 15 million total US visits last week”.

She also said that scrapping its ‘by invitation only’ policy had allowed Google+ to climb up the list of the 10 most popular websites in the Hitwise list, seizing the eigth place. “In just one week, Google+ went from ranking as 54th most visited site in our Social Networking and Forums category to eigth place,” Dougherty said.

Facebook has traditionally dominated the list, and last week it reigned unchallenged with nearly 1.8 billion visits. YouTube followed in second place with about half a million visits, while Twitter was lagged behind at third place with about 33,000 visits. Myspace and LinkedIn were close to Google+, occupying the seventh and sixth places respectively.

Dougherty added that not only had Google+ boomed in a week, but that its subscribers had diversified. She said that while at the beginning Google+ had attracted what she called “early adopters”, namely students and experts, it had then moved to win followers with “lower to middle income profile”.

This evolution in audience profile indicates that Google+ may be shifting into the “Early Majority” stage,” she said. Despite the huge growth achieved by Google+, the numbers give Facebook reasons not to worry about its rival yet. However Google’s family of features and application could encourage more people to subscribe.

National Coffee Day

Posted by Tommy On September - 29 - 20111 COMMENT

September 29th is National Coffee Day. I have been a coffee junkie for so long and this is the first time I am hearing about a National coffee day. So, anyway, coffee day it is. So what should we do on a Coffee Day ?

Well to start coffee is free today at many fast food chains across the country. So just watch out for coffee junkies today, cause they might be a little annoying today.

7-Eleven is offering free coffee from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Krispy Kreme is handing out free cups of its house blend.

For a landmark 2008 study, Harvard researchers tracked 130,000 men and women for up to 24 years and found no evidence linking coffee consumption to increased mortality, according to a university website. Even people who drank up to six cups of coffee a day were at no higher risk of death.

In light of the evidence, Harvard researcher Dr. Rob van Dam, an assistant professor in the department of nutrition at the university’s School of Public Health, concluded: “For the general population, the evidence suggest that coffee drinking doesn’t have any serious detrimental health effects.”

Saudi woman driver not to be lashed!

Posted by Riz On September - 29 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has overturned a court ruling sentencing a woman to 10 lashes for breaking a ban on female drivers, reports say.

The ruling, although not officially confirmed, was tweeted by a Saudi princess and reported by AP news agency citing an unnamed official.

The woman, named as Shema, was found guilty of driving in Jeddah in July.

The sentence came two days after the king announced women would be allowed to vote for the first time in 2015.

“Thank God, the lashing of Shema is cancelled. Thanks to our beloved king,” tweeted Princess Amira al-Taweel, wife of Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

“I am sure all Saudi women will be so happy.”

Two other women are due to appear in court later this year on similar charges, reports say.

Google’s doodle explains it all. Google is now 13 years old. Happy birthday Google.

Google, the world most celebrated search engine, was once started with very few employees with a goal in mind. Now, they have gone on to capture the entire world with their technology and excellence.

I leave you with the History of Google as seen in Google’s website

History of Google

1995

  • Larry Page and Sergey Brin meet at Stanford. (Larry, 22, a U Michigan grad, is considering the school; Sergey, 21, is assigned to show him around.) According to some accounts, they disagree about almost everything during this first meeting.

1996

  • Larry and Sergey, now Stanford computer science grad students, begin collaborating on a search engine called BackRub.
  • BackRub operates on Stanford servers for more than a year—eventually taking up too much bandwidth to suit the university.

1997

  • Larry and Sergey decide that the BackRub search engine needs a new name. After some brainstorming, they go with Google—a play on the word “googol,” a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. The use of the term reflects their mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.

1998

August

  • Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim writes a check for $100,000 to an entity that doesn‘t exist yet: a company called Google Inc.

September

  • Google sets up workspace in Susan Wojcicki‘s garage at 232 Santa Margarita, Menlo Park.
  • Google files for incorporation in California on September 4. Shortly thereafter, Larry and Sergey open a bank account in the newly-established company‘s name and deposit Andy Bechtolsheim‘s check.
  • Larry and Sergey hire Craig Silverstein as their first employee; he‘s a fellow computer science grad student at Stanford.

December

  • “PC Magazine” reports that Google “has an uncanny knack for returning extremely relevant results” and recognizes us as the search engine of choice in the Top 100 Web Sites for 1998.

1999

February

  • We outgrow our garage office and move to new digs at 165 University Avenue in Palo Alto with just eight employees.

April

May

  • Omid Kordestani joins to run sales—the first non-engineering hire.

June

  • Our first press release announces a $25 million round from Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins; John Doerr and Michael Moritz join the board. The release quotes Moritz describing “Googlers” as ”people who use Google”.

August

  • We move to our first Mountain View location: 2400 E. Bayshore. Mountain View is a few miles south of Stanford University, and north of the older towns of Silicon Valley: Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose.

November

  • Charlie Ayers joins as Google’s first chef. He wins the job in a cook-off judged by the company‘s 40 employees. Previous claim to fame: catering for the Grateful Dead.

Top 5 unexplored places in Earth

Posted by Riz On September - 25 - 20112 COMMENTS

Man’s technological might has help him to penetrate into all corners of the Earth and into the space.

Man, however, has not left his footprints in some places of the Earth. Through this post, we attempt to tell you the Top 5 places in the Earth that is still Unexplored.

1. Northwest Siberia

Siberia constitutes almost all of Northern Asia, of which western Siberia is covered in ice while eastern and central Siberia consists of mountain ranges. Recently many research expeditions are conducted by scientists and geologists to study its environment and ecology, as most of the population is concentrated in western Siberia.

2. Caves

Deep, winding, dark, slippery and uninhabitable; caves also remain one of the least explored and documented places on earth. Caving is very popular in France, Italy, Australia, UK, United States etc. hence most of the caves currently documented are from Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia. However, China which has the highest limestone deposits in the world has very few explored caves. South America, Africa, Antarctica have not been explored to its maximum. The exact number of caves on Earth is still not known. Voronya Cave, Georgia the deepest known cave in the world too has not been completely explored due to its extremely inhospitable environment.

3. Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest contains 50% of the world’s rainforests. Its biodiversity is extremely vast as it supports numerous types of plant species and over 2,000 birds and mammals. Its climate and surroundings have invoked the interests of many large expeditions for explorations; however, its habitat has impeded thorough exploration of this region. About 2.5 million insect species and 438,000 species of plants have been officially documented with many left to be discovered.

4. Antartica

No one knows what exactly lies beneath the icy terrain of Antarctica, with ice sheets 2 miles thick, it is also the coldest place on earth. Scientists believe there is a network of rivers, streams and stony land makes up its geography. Recently, the discovery of sub-glacial lakes has opened a new chapter in Antarctica’s exploration. There are possibilities of these lakes harboring life forms which can be studied thus providing useful answers to scientists about life in outer space. The ocean floor below the Antarctic has not yet been explored.

5. Marina Trench

The deepest and darkest place in the ocean is the 35,800 feet deep Mariana Trench which is one of the least explored places on earth.  Due to its depth and pressure of up to 1,000 atmospheres, the deep is completely hostile to humans. Even though scientific development has increased man’s knowledge about deep sea life with discovery of many new varieties of deep-sea creatures on the ocean floor only 2% of the ocean floor has been explored, leaving a lot more to be discovered. A study of the deep-ocean life will help scientists to understand deep-sea creatures’ unique living patterns in harsh ocean conditions.

Indian Woman swims for 12 hours to save herself

Posted by Riz On September - 24 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Indian Woman has swam the Ganges river in Bihar for 12 hours to save herself after her husband pushed her into the river to murder her.

Amrita, a resident of Aurangabad district, married her husband Adarsh two years ago in Amritsar where both met while working in the same office.

Her husband threw her into a river to get rid off her probably not knowing that she was a good swimmer. Amrita Kumari is alive, but only after an arduous 12-hour struggle across the Ganges in Bihar.

‘My husband was sure that I will be killed after he pushed me off the bridge into the Ganges. But I was saved because I know swimming,’ Amrita, in her 20s, told IANS Friday.

Adarsh Kumar allegedly pushed Amrita off the Mahatma Gandhi Setu bridge here in this Bihar capital late Wednesday.

‘I swam for nearly 12 hours in the middle of the river trying to reach the bank. Finally, when I was about to become unconscious, a strong water current pushed me to the river bank,’ Amrita said.

Amrita recalled that for large stretches, the strong current pushed her back into the middle of the stream.

Some boatmen and local villagers spotted her lying unconscious on the bank, near Rasulpur village in Samastipur district, about 60 km from here. They tried to revive her and informed the local police.

Police have begun searching for Adarsh Kumar and his family, which they believe, was opposed to their inter-caste marriage.
