Facebook Like button turns one year old

Posted by Shane On April - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

On April 21, Facebook celebrated the “Like” button’s first birthday.

Just one year ago, CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at the F8 developers conference to announce the advent of the “Like,” along with a host of other Facebook expansions. And today we find the Like button almost in every websites. Cool!

What is a Facebook Like Button?

This may sound silly, but if your a newbie to internet. Facebook Like Button is a feature that will help you to express your interest about a website or its contents, in your facebook account.

Lets say,  a user visits any website, for instance Thfire.com, and if the users likes the website or its contents, the user goes on to click the Like button.

The clicking of Like button will lead the user to his/her facebook account and he/she can share the preferred stories to their friends using the Like button.  By this way, the social connection with the friends is maintained. Thats why we call Facebook as the giant in Social Networking sites.

As per Mashable, “50,000 websites installed the Like button in its first week, and that number rose to 100,000 in less than a month.”

According to Facebook, 10,000 new websites are adding this social tool every day.

Despite users’ requests for an accompanying “Dislike” option, Facebook has not announced plans to modify the “Like” button.

Merlins beard, i couldnt believe on the email which i just received from Yahoo!  In the email, Yahoo officially states ” MyBloglog Service is to be discontinued”

can you believe it? I couldnt believe my eyes on what i am seeing.

What is Yahoo! MyBloglog?

For those who are unaware, let me first tell you what Yahoo! MyBlogLog is. MyBlogLog, is a yahoo service that lets bloggers see who their readers are and help the readers to interact with the authors in return.

MyBlogLog was acquired by Yahoo in early 2007 for $10 million, and at the time, provided a way for bloggers to easily create a community for their readers

Official Yahoo! website says, the reason for dropping the MyBlogLog service is due to the emergence of Facebook and twitter, that made the yahoo based service to decline for months which led them to drop the service.

I am really surprised to see Yahoo! abandoning its service. Its not daily we come across a giant like Yahoo to cut off its service.

Yahoo also reports they are also considering to abandon Delicious service later this year.

The Email which Yahoo sent to all of its MyBlogLog users continues below,

Dear MyBlogLog Customer,

You have been identified as a customer of Yahoo! MyBlogLog. We will officially discontinue Yahoo! MyBlogLog effective May 24, 2011. Your agreement with Yahoo!, to the extent that it applies to the Yahoo! MyBlogLog, will terminate on May 24, 2011.

After May 24, 2011 your credit card will no longer be charged for premium services on MyBlogLog. We will refund you the unused portion of your subscription, if any. Google Boss Warns on Social Networking

Posted by Tommy On August - 18 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Google boss Eric Schmidt warns that, “Young people might have to one day change their names to escape their previous online activity.”

I think that day is already here. With the overnight celebs in youtube for the wrong reasons, its obvious that the next time these people need to use internet they have to go on a new identity.

Ok, lets see what more Eric had to say, ” I fear they did not understand the consequences of having so much personal information about them online.”

Hmm, that seems to be a bit off. Did he not notice that company he works for is actually investing more and more into social networking then ever before?

Eric Schmidt

This is Eric Schmidt

Google has recently acquired Slide and Jambool, two firms specialising in providing services for social networks.

Slide is gaming firm, whilst Jambool provides virtual currencies and payments. Google has also reportedly invested in another social network gaming firm called Zynga.

Many believe the acquisitions are a sign that the search giant is about to launch another social network. Some commentators have already given the rumoured product a name: Google.me.

Wait there is more : Google already owns two social networks, Google Buzz and Orkut. Also Buzz was caught in a controversy when it linked up with people’s Gmail accounts without asking them and making their contacts were publicly visible.

Mr Schmidt said: “I don’t believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time… I mean we really have to think about these things as a society.”

Ok, Mr Schmidt. I think that you have no idea what Google is doing behind your back or you are just frustrated that none of Google’s social networking worked? Or trying to cover-up how you and Google failed to make a presence in social networking? or are you trying to break Facebook and your other competitors ? Nice try!

Whats really ironic is that Google’s boss is talking about ‘consequences’ of putting too much personal information online while their search engine seems to be doing just about the opposite of that and tracking every single human that accesses its services.

George Steinbrenner passes away

Posted by Shane On July - 13 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

George Steinbrenner has died.

“It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing,” the family said in a statement released this morning. “He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80. He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family – his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”

Steinbrenner turned 80 years old on July 4 and as recently as Friday he was at the Yankees minor league complex in Florida where he told an Associated Press reporter he was “feeling good.”

The family has said funeral arrangements will be private, but there will be an additional public service with details to be announced at a later date.

The recession hit automobile giant Ford is back on track. It has managed to post $2 Billion quaterly net profit. Ford Motors managed this purly from restructuring. Ford also said it was on track to at least break even in 2011. This made the investors happy! It shot Ford shares up more than 9%.

Ford also posted an operating loss for the quarter that was better than what analysts expected, excluding a net gain of $2.8 Billion from one-time items that included the debt reduction actions, despite reeling global markets that helped push General Motors and Chrysler into bankruptcy. The automaker said it expects the US economy to begin to recover in the second half of this year. Now that something I wanted to hear about.

“Despite the really tough economic environment our plan is working and the underlying business is improving,” Chief financial officer Lewis Booth told reporter. “We continue to make really good progress on cost reductions,” Booth said. “You can now see the results of the operations focused on cash.”

Ford is also the first automaker in the US to make such mark since 2004.
