WHO fears Second wave of Swine Flu attack

Posted by Shane On August - 23 - 20091 COMMENT

swine-flu-mustacheThe World Health Organisation (WHO) is urging people around the world to brace themselves for a second wave of the swine flu pandemic as the heavily populated northern hemisphere edges towards the cooler season when flu thrives.

“The WHO is still mobilised and worried,” spokesman Gregory Hartl said as the global health watchdog kept an anxious eye on some “mysterious” patterns of illness associated with the new A (H1N1) virus that appeared in April.

WHO Director General Margaret Chan warned on Friday that there had been second and third waves in previous pandemics.

“We cannot say for certain whether the worst is over or the worst is yet to come,” Chan said in a videotaped address to a symposium on flu in the Asia-Pacific region.

“We need to be prepared for whatever surprises this capricious new virus delivers next,” she added.

Some 1,799 people have died since the A(H1N1) was uncovered in Mexico and the United States nearly six months ago, according to the WHO.

By comparison, an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 people die around the world every year from seasonal flu, and overall the symptoms of the new pandemic virus have proved to be mild in the great majority of known cases.

Swine flu has spread swiftly into 177 countries, proving to be more infectious than seasonal flu and more durable through warmer months. Some 182,000 people worldwide are known to have caught swine flu based on laboratory confirmed cases, but the WHO has long advised countries to give up counting; the true number may in the millions, according to some experts

India in Swine Flu Fear

A Series of Swine Flu death in India has made the country in grave Panic. The Sub Continent now has 4 confirmed deaths due to Swine Flu.

The first death due to Swine Flu was reported in Pune.  Rida Sheik, aged 14, a girl studying school was the first victim. After the media aired the report, panic struked India as forest fire leading all the parents with their children storm the local hospitals. Government of India cleared the air urging the nation not to panic. But the words from Health Ministry was not able to console the public.

The second death due to swine flu was reported in Mumbai following Pune death that made the panic in real tragedy. Public went real mad after hearing the series of death taking the matter very serious.

The third death again was reported in Pune last night, August 8. A teacher of 43 years was the third Indian victim to Swine Flu.

The death is the mere case. The testing that the public in Pune undertook with panic was also a blessing in disguise. The testing done on the people help the medical officials confirm of more swine flu positive people.

The sad part here is, many school students are the victim of Swine Flu.

This morning August 9, the fourth death and the first from Gujarat was reported. Pravin Patel, an NRI, aged 40 is reported to be death. The news is currently hot topic in media. Pravin Patel was tested positive for Swine Flu just a day ago.

Following the situation, Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad is trying to clear the panic but always quoting “We have sent the medicines to eight major cities of India .NO NEED TO PANIC”. But he is unaware that the situation is changed from mere panic to a grave tension and real unease in public.

football_fifa_world_cup_trophy_1962_chile_posterRussian soccer fans have been told to drink whisky on their trip to Wales for next month’s World Cup qualifier to ward off the H1N1 swine flu virus, the head of the country’s supporter association (VOB) said on Monday.

“We urge our fans to drink a lot of Welsh whisky as a form of disinfection,” VOB head Alexander Shprygin told Reuters.

“That should cure all symptoms of the disease.”

Russia’s Health Ministry has issued a public warning against travelling to Britain because of the spread of the H1N1 virus but Shprygin said he expected at least several hundred fans would go to Wales for the Sept. 9 qualifier in Cardiff.

“Health officials say this virus is very dangerous but being a fan myself I can tell you that for a real fan nothing is more important than the well-being of the team,” said Shprygin, who also sits on the executive board of the Russian FA.

“Russian fans don’t fear anything or anybody so this virus will not stand in our way of supporting our team.”

The Russian FA also said health issues should not prevent fans from travelling.

“We don’t want our team to be without any support for such an important match so we urge our fans to go to Wales despite the health warning,” a spokesman said.

Germany lead European Group Four with 16 points from six games, one ahead of Russia, with Wales in fourth place on nine points from seven matches.

Swine Flu affect Pregnant Women much Harder

Posted by Shane On July - 29 - 20091 COMMENT

Pregnant_womanPregnant Woman from Swine flu located areas “Be aware”. This is what the latest thing  swine flu has made the government officials do.

A Study conducted by US medicals finds out that, the swine flu hits the pregnant women 4 times harder than normal population. In other words, they  have a greater risk of adopting the flu than the other.

Now this findings has brought upon serious concern for the government. The reason for that is, the pregnant women who catch this H1N1 virus ends up in complicated case with no recovery from the virus. Which makes it a Must and Necessity to give the pregnant women the swine flu control Vaccine if developed quicker.

The Study that revealed the shocker was conducted on  34 pregnant ladies as mentioned in BBC News. Out of which 6 died reportedly.

Five of the other admitted women underwent caesarean deliveries. Four of the babies have now left hospital, and the fifth, born very prematurely, is doing well. Luckily, none of the babies showed any sign of swine flu infection.

£100m boost for UK government lab

pirbrightThe UK research institute at the centre of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak two years ago has been given £100m to build new laboratories.

The head of the Institute for Animal Health (IAH) at Pirbright in Surrey, said that the state-of-the-art facilities are as safe as they can be.

Research at the new laboratory will focus on controlling the spread of diseases as a result of climate change.

Scientists will also combat the spread of diseases from animals to humans.

The episode two years ago drew attention to the state of the facilities at the site – which one report described as “shabby and dilapidated”.

According to the institute’s director, Martin Shirley, the new investment will enable him to build laboratories that are world class and meet the highest standards of biosecurity.

“What I hope is that it will give confidence to all our stakeholders that here at Pirbright we have the world’s leading experts. That it will be state-of-the-art and it will be as safe as it can possibly be.”

Research at the new laboratory will focus on controlling the spread of diseases as a result of climate change, dealing with the growing threat to food security and combating diseases that spread from animals to humans such as swine flu and bird flu.

“There is an increasing recognition that diseases won’t go away,” says Professor Shirley.

Globally, a new animal disease is said to appear roughly every two years. Three quarters of these are viral or have some potential to spread to humans.

“I think there is a recognition that research in this area is important for the wellbeing of the UK”.

BBC deserves the credit for the post

daniel_radcliffeThis latest release of Harry potter and the half blood prince is just killing me in excitement. I happened to notice a TV  NEWS channel which Interviews Daniel Radcliffe.

I just  sat in front of the television to see the  clip of half blood prince. Daniel was answering questions about his latest film. And how they are all concerned about Rupert who is recovering from Swine flu. On answering few of the questions, Danielle was asked whether the NEWS  that he can rotate his arm 360 degree is true or just an hype.

Daniel laughed at this and right away he stood up and showed the interviewer by twisting his arm 360 degree. Man that was just unexpected. He was kind and sincere to share about himself to other people. I actually thought he will skip off the question.

Well what do you know, the famous Harry potter can do things other than Magic.

Rupert Grint Gets Swine Flu!

Harry potter star Rupert Grint

Harry potter star Rupert Grint

The global pandemic Swine Flu which has been spreading worldwide for the last few months, has decided not to even spare the stars. Yep, its not confirmed that the one of the Stars of Harry Potter movies is sick with Swine Flu. Rupert Grint is 20 years old and plays as Ron Weasley in Harry Potter.

Looks like Rupert Grint caught the flu while he was filming for the latest movie in the Harry Potter series. Looks like swine flu is also spreading in the Wizard World.  Hope the news is covered by Daily Prophet. I guess this is the first case of a wizard who caught swine flu. OK, enough with all the Wizard stuff, lets get back to reality.

For now, it seems Rupert Grint is recovering well from swine flu. He is also expected to attend the Tuesday’s London premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

His rep said, “It has just been confirmed that Rupert Grint has taken a few days out of filming due to a mild bout of swine flu, He has now recovered and is looking forward to joining his fellow cast members at the junket and premieres this week and will then return to filming directly afterwards.” In a statement he released to the press.

He also added that Repert Grint’s doctors have determined that their patient is not contagious. Looks like they don’t want to scare the hell off other stars who attend the premiers. Well, I don’t think the no matter what the doctor says, other stars who attend the premiers will be a lot more concerned about getting infected. Some may even be open about it, but most will be scared to death inside.

It also looks like the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows crew were able to go ahead without Rupert Grint and have not lost any of the production days. Looks like they must have covered the part of the movie where Ron Weasley has an argument with Harry Potter under the influence of dark magic and leaves his friends to go back home.
