Listeria Outbreak warning issued in Colorado, Texas, Indiana, Nebraska and Oklahoma
Health officials have issued a warning for cantaloupes from a revered melon-producing area of the US state of Colorado amid a bacteria outbreak blamed for four deaths in the state and New Mexico, troubling farmers who depend on sales of the fruit.
The warning from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention came after 16 cases of a strain of Listeria were reported in five states, including 11 from Colorado, two from Texas, and one each from Indiana, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
The agency said it was the first Listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupe in the United States. The US Food & Drug Administration said it had not recalled the melons while it worked to locate the source.
Rocky Ford cantaloupes, named for a region along the old Santa Fe Trail about 130 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of Denver, are prized for their above-average sugar content. W.C. Fields reportedly said bald guys have “a head shaped like a Rocky Ford cantaloupe,” and Lucile Ball had the melons delivered to her dressing room.
“This is really silly. You can get Listeria any place. I eat those melons every day,” said Kent Lusk, a fifth-generation cantaloupe farmer from Rocky Ford.
US in Poverty, says report
The Once strong and mighty US is out for the count as the country has swept into new low in terms of Poverty. According to a new report, 1 in 6 Americans are below the Poverty line.
The overall poverty rate climbed to 15.1 percent, or 46.2 million, up from 14.3 percent in 2009.
The 46.2 million now living in poverty is the largest on record dating back to when the census began tracking poverty in 1959. Based on percentages, it tied the poverty level in 1993 and was the highest since 1983.
New York often mentioned as “The City That Never Sleeps” seems like it will be out of business.
68,000 New Yorkers are in Poverty, according to the new reports.
No Jobs to blame
Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, executive director of New York’s Catholic Charities, said the figures — and the reality on the street — are discouraging.
“Hope for most people is getting a decent job, and boy, is it hard to find jobs,” he said.
“Most poor people are working, but their two jobs are now one job, or their wife or husband has lost a job,” Sullivan said. “And they never know if they’ll make the rent, or of there will be enough money for food at the end of the month. And they live in fear that their hours will be cut back and then they won’t have the rent, the food, the medicine.”
David R. Jones, president and CEO of the Community Service Society, said his agency’s own surveys also find things getting worse, especially among groups such as working mothers and young Afro-American men.
“You can double the numbers for Afro-American and Latinos,” he said. “So many have no high school diploma, no employment skills. … Four in 10 working mothers are behind in the rent. Sixty percent aren’t sure they can pay their other bills.”
Wealthy No More
Sullivan said, “There hasn’t been any recovery, not in jobs, not in food prices.” He said government funds for food pantries were cut by nearly half this year.
“The funds have gone down but the demand hasn’t,” he said. “I’ll go into a food pantry in the suburbs, and people who three years ago were bringing in bags of food, they’re now asking for food.”
US-UK spy link with Libya Exposed
US and UK spy agencies built close ties with their Libyan counterparts during the so-called War on Terror, according to documents discovered at the office of Col Gaddafi’s former spy chief.
The papers suggest the CIA abducted several suspected militants from 2002 to 2004 and handed them to Tripoli. The UK’s MI6 also apparently gave the Gaddafi regime details of dissidents. The documents, found by Human Rights Watch workers, have not been seen by the BBC or independently verified.
Meanwhile, the head of Libya’s interim governing body, the National Transitional Council, said its soldiers were laying siege to towns still held by Col Gaddafi’s forces. Mustafa Abdel Jalil said Sirte, Bani Walid, Jufra and Sabha were being given humanitarian aid, but had one week to surrender.
However, the BBC’s Jon Leyne in Benghazi says there are unconfirmed reports that Bani Walid has now been taken by anti-Gaddafi forces.
Americans Believe US government staged 9/11 attacks
Yet again, there is a cry out there among normal American citizens involving 9/11 attacks. The new poll conducted by BBC just proves an American thought.
As posted by Yahoo!, according to the survey conducted by BBC documentary ‘The Conspiracy Files – Ten Years On’ , 1 out of 7 American think US Government staged 9/11 attacks.
A survey, which interviewed 1,000 people in Britain and the same number in the US, found that 14 percent Britons and 15 percent Americans think the US administration was involved in the tragedy, says the Daily Mail.
The polled people were asked: ‘It is generally accepted that these attacks were carried out by Al Qaeda. However some people have suggested there was a wider conspiracy that included the American government. Do you, yourself, believe that there was a wider conspiracy, or not?’
The belief that there was a conspiracy was more common among younger people, with 24 percent) of 16 to 24-year-olds believing the theory.
However, about two thirds of those polled – 68 percent – said they did not think there was a conspiracy.
