Tax Deadline, 2 Extra Days This Year!

In case you forgot April 15th is the Tax Day, the good news is it falls on a Sunday and April 16 happens to be a Washington, D.C. holiday making the last day to file taxes April 17th.

Procrastinators: Worried about having to file for yet another extension this year with the upcoming tax deadline?

Breathe easy.

Tax day is typically April 15. Every year,  people across the nation rush to get their documents in order to meet that deadline.

But this year, April 15 falls on a Sunday. And April 16 happens to be a Washington, D.C. holiday called Emancipation Day, which celebrates President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act in 1862.

On that day, slaves in Washington were freed nine months before the president issued his famous Emancipation Proclamation, telegraphing the eventual end of slavery to the rest of the nation.

Because the holiday is treated like a federal holiday for the Internal Revenue Service, that means April 17 is the deadline to file income taxes.

The two extra days won’t affect the 98.9 million people who have already filed this year. But for those who haven’t filed, it could mean the difference of filing for a six-month extension or not.

If filing by April 17 still isn’t enough, take a look at the link here for getting yourself some more time.
