A person browsing Online

The title Sounds funny , but the message it  provides  is more than funny. It is found out that the number of  Web Pages available Online  crosses  the total population of the earth. To say, the ratio between the Population and the web pages will be  1 : 150.

This  shows that there are about more than 1 trillion web pages available online. A notable fact is , the world population as recently updated is 6.7 billion. It  indicates,  for every person alive in this Earth , he has about 150 web pages to competitive him.

The  findings of the total web page available online was actually done by Microsoft’s  Bing.com  for their search engine updation. During this crawling process, the data that  Bing.com got from various websites crossed 1 trillion. Few weeks ago, Google announced the  crowding traffic  of web pages available and also claimed the presence of more than 1 trillion pages online which is now proved by Bing.com

“An average person would need six hundred thousand decades of nonstop reading to read through the information,” News.com.au quoted Bing as saying.

Mark Higginson, director of analytics for Nielsen Online, said that the global online population had jumped 16 per cent since last year.

“Approximately 1.46 billion people worldwide now use the internet which represents a solid 16 per cent increase from the previous year’s estimate (1.26 billion in 2007),” he said.

The largest Internet population belongs to China, with 338 million users online, which is more than there were people in the US.

However InternetWorldStats.com (IWS), a website that combines multiple data sources, has claimed that China’s online population is more like 298 million.

“With the rates of India and China still quite low, there is ample room for growth in the coming decade,” said Higginson.

According to IWS, the top 5 countries with the most internet users are:

1 – China (298,000,000 users, or 22.4 percent of their population)

2 – US (227,190,989, or 74.7 percent)

3 – Japan (94,000,000, or 73.8 percent)

4 – India (81,000,000, or 7.1 percent)

5 – Brazil (67,510,400, or 34.4% percent)

Yahoo and Microsoft sign Search deal

Microsoft and Yahoo

Microsoft and Yahoo Join hands in Search Engine welcoming New Era

Yahoo and Microsoft have announced a long-rumoured internet search deal that will help the two companies take on chief rival Google.

Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power the Yahoo website and Yahoo will in turn become the advertising sales team for Microsoft’s online offering.

Yahoo has been struggling to make profits in recent years.

But last year it rebuffed several takeover bids from Microsoft in an attempt to go it alone.

Yahoo shares closed down 12.1% on the day, while Microsoft shares moved up by 1.4%.

Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer said the 10-year deal would provide Microsoft’s Bing search engine with the necessary scale to compete.

“Through this agreement with Yahoo, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company,” said Mr Ballmer.

“Microsoft and Yahoo know there’s so much more that search could be. This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search,” he added.

In return for ceding control of its search engine, Yahoo will get to keep 88% of the revenue from all search ad sales on its site for the first five years of the deal, and have the right to sell adverts on some Microsoft sites.

Yahoo’s search team, meanwhile, will have to brace itself for job losses over the next two years. Some staff will transfer to Microsoft, others can stay on with Yahoo, but redundancies would be unavoidable, Yahoo chief executive Carol Bartz told the BBC.

‘New era’

Yahoo said the deal would benefit Yahoo’s users and advertisers.

“This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of internet innovation and development,” said Ms Bartz.

The deal became possible after Yahoo’s co-founder Jerry Yang stepped down as chief executive of the company late last year.

“Only a Yahoo outsider like Ms Bartz could do such a deal,” said Tim Weber, business editor of the BBC News website.

“She has no sentimental attachment to what was once the core of Yahoo, its search business. Microsoft was helped by the fact that at long last it managed to develop a search engine – Bing – that is a credible alternative to search giant Google.”

Technology analyst Rob Enderle said: “This move makes up for a lot of the stupid mistakes made by the preceding [Yahoo] administration”.

Yahoo said the deal would boost annual operating income by $500m and secure $200m in savings.

The tie-up will give Microsoft and Yahoo a combined market share in the US search ad market of about 30%.

Google would still be the dominant force with a share of about 65%.

Negotiations

  • The deal ends years of back-and-forth negotiations between the two companies.
  • Microsoft originally offered to buy Yahoo in January 2008 – with an offer worth about $47.5bn.
  • But Mr Ballmer later withdrew that bid after Yahoo’s then boss, Mr Yang, demanded a higher price.
  • Yahoo instead opted for an online advertising partnership with rival Google.
  • But that tie-up was later abandoned because of the risk of a protracted battle with regulators over competition issues.

Well its getting very very serious in the clash of Giants of  web industry. Yes this is the clash between Search Engine daddy Google ,Yahoo and MSN which is run by Microsoft. A new Search engine have been introduced by Microsoft recently. And guess what, it looks the same  as Google with the position and titles like Images,web,videos,etc.,.

The Search Engine from Microsoft has been named bing.com .yep it is, and they feel that the name is catchy. Actually the authorities in the chat, questioned that at the beginning  Google name was not a international word or verb, but now its familar to all . Like wise to grow in the web world and to attract visitors the first thing we need is a good domain name and we have it attractive.

This is what  Josh Krichefski, of digital media agency BLM Quantum quoted  “When you look historically, the names that succeed are those that are easy to remember. There are three main search engines that people know – Google, Yahoo! and MSN. All are similarly short words,” .

The depth of success lies in how short  is the domain name and how far people can remember it. To be honest when i was a kid, i struggled way too much to actually remember Google word but now its very much familiar and became my day to day activity.Andy Nicol, managing director of Sputnik digital design and marketing, also agress with the above point we mentioned. He added that the key to a successful search engine name is the punchy sound of a word.

“You want something short and catchy,” he says. “Anything longer just sounds a bit tacky.”

So far the biggest player of  Search Engines is  Google with 64%, Yahoo has a hold of 20% online users and MSN has a  mere  8.2%. The software giant Microsoft failed so long in this business. But i reckon with the introduction of bing.com they will bounce back very hard. But Its  only a beginning for Bing.com , it has way too much to proceed.
